Today has been one of those days where it has been hard to write. As I sit here I’ve probably written and deleted this newsletter at least a dozen times over the past 8 hours.
I’ve tried to journal in hopes that it would spark the right words. I’ve tried listening to music and scrolling through the internet. I’ve even allowed myself to take a nap thinking that if I woke up refreshed then the words would flow.
And literally, none of my normal tricks worked.
Every idea that has come to mind today just didn’t feel…powerful enough.
I believe that over the past few months, as I have decided to take this newsletter more seriously, I’ve begun to put a lot of pressure on myself for my words to have a big impact. I mean, if I’m going to be a real writer then my words should make you feel something, right?
And I’m not saying that my desire to make a bigger impact is a bad thing. But I do want this newsletter to be worth your time and if you choose, I want it to be worth investing in as well.
Speaking of investing. Becoming a paid subscriber gives you access to our monthly self-care toolkits, private chat and BTS articles!
With that, I believe I’ve put too much focus on saying the right words in the right way. I follow so many incredible writers here on Substack. Writers who use their words to pull you into their world and make you feel like you are having a personal conversation with them. Writers who can make you feel a dozen different emotions in 1000 words or less. And writers who are changing the world through their platforms.
I don’t want to say that I am comparing myself to them, I understand that we are all on our own journeys, but it does make me feel like what I’m saying is not making a big enough impact. That my words are not hitting hard like I want them to.
Today, as I began to feel the frustration bubble back up, I decided to take another break to go pick up the kiddo from school. As I’m walking out the door, I asked God what it was that He wanted me to say. And clear as day, I heard…
Your gift is more than enough just the way it is. Your gift is impactful just the way it is. Just write what is in your heart at the moment.
After I came back home, I sat down on my couch as River built a magical picnic on the floor and I began typing exactly what I felt.
At this moment I feel frustrated because the words that I want to say, the big impactful message, are just not flowing like I want them to.
I feel inadequate like what I’m doing may not be good enough. I’m aware that it’s not perfection, when it comes to writing, I learned a long time ago to let perfection go. And I know that the only way to become a better writer is to write. But there is still some level of inadequacy that makes me feel like what I’m creating isn’t going to pack the punch that I want it to.
But also at this moment, I am finding comfort in what God told me. My gift is more than enough just the way it is.
And I hope that encourages you too, friend. You may not feel like what you’re doing is significant. You may not feel like what you’re doing is making a greater impact. You may not feel like people are paying attention to all of the work you’re putting in.
But I want you to keep going. Holding on to those thoughts of inadequacy is doing nothing but holding you back and causing unnecessary stress. I truly believe that nothing we’re doing is insignificant. The gift you have been given is not insignificant. Even if it’s not currently reaching thousands of people. Even if you’re not being recognized on platforms all over the world, someone is watching, listening, or reading what you’re creating.
What we’re building right now is impacting someone. You may not know who it is, you may never meet them or they may never say anything to you about it but I guarantee you that if we keep going, what we’re creating is worth it. It’s changing someone else’s life even if it’s just one person.
Your gift is more than enough, just the way it is.
Cheers to a restful week!

BEFORE YOU GO…
Don’t forget to take a deep breath!!
Love this!! Being “enough” is always tough in any context but definitely can agree specifically when it comes to writing. There are so many talented people using all the same words we all have access to, so hard to not compare what I create, and feel less than. Such a great reminder here! Plus, I believe there’s room for all of us
I love this, Alisha! Thank you for the reminder (and God, for giving it to her both for her, and to share with us!).
And it's true! People don't always SAY anything even if they're loving your work. It surprised me that people were enjoying my Friday Reflections cause I feel like I'm just rambling on and on in them. But some people actually do like it!
